Anthony Stabile was an associate of the Lucchese crime family who was a hitman under Jimmy Conway for most of his time in the family. He failed to murder Henry Hill, since Hill did not go to Florida with him, and in 1982[1], he was murdered because of drug connections and the possibility that he could become an FBI informant.
Biography[]
Stabile was born of a Sicilian family, and became associated with the Lucchese crime family. He hung out at The Bamboo Lounge with many other Lucchese associates, and was present at Robert's Lounge when Tommy DeVito shot Michael Gianco, and sought medical help; he was also there the next time, when DeVito killed him. Stabile was not involved in the Lufthansa Heist of 1978, as he was more of an enforcer than an associate.
In 1982, he was ordered to murder Henry Hill by Jimmy Conway, who knew that Henry was getting in trouble since he was getting involved with drugs. Conway told Hill to go to Florida with Anthony to put a hit out on an FBI informant there, but Hill sensed that he would not come back alive, so he did not take the plane ride, and Stabile did not murder him.
Stabile was killed by Banky Frigente, a Gambino soldier, on the orders of Jimmy Conway, since Stabile was involved in the drugs trade network that was established with Frank Carbone, Tommy DeVito, Henry Hil, and Conway in Pittsburgh before the Lufthansa incident, but also probably because he could have become an informant.
Anthony was shoved in the trunk of his own Cadillac DeVille then parked in a vacant field in Ozone Park, Queens, shot in the head. Frigente then set the Cadillac on fire. The police investigation led police to Frigente as the trigger man and made Frigente go into hiding.
