Anthony "Tony Bender" Strollo was a Capo in the Genovese crime family.
Biography[]
Strollo was of Calabrian ancestry, which allowed him to be a made man in the Masseria crime family from the 1920s until his defection to Salvatore Maranzano in 1931. He became Capo of the Greenwich Village Crew under Lucky Luciano and Vito Genovese in the Genovese crime family, and became Underboss under Genovese after Luciano's arrest in 1936. He was cheated out of the succession when Genovese was exiled to Italy, with Frank Costello becoming boss and Willie Moretti becoming Underboss. In 1946, when Genovese returned to New York, he became his assistant once more and planned out the hit on Frank Costello in 1957, which failed.
Death[]
In 1959, when Genovese was arrested, Strollo thought that he did not have to send a cut of his narcotics money to him, a big mistake. Also, he had conspired with Carlo Gambino in trumping up charges which resulted in the arrest of Genovese on narcotics charges. Strollo drove from his home in Fort Lee but was killed en route, possibly by gunmen hiding in the back seat.
