Biography[]

Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano was born in Apan, Hidalgo, Mexico in 1974. He initially served in the Mexican Army and was trained by the US Army and Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), and he fought against drug dealers and the Zapatista rebellion in Chiapas. In 1998 he was arrested for marijuana possession, and on 27 March he deserted the army to join Osiel Cardenas Guillen and Arturo Guzman Decena in the Los Zetas cartel. After Guzman's death in 2002 and the capture of Pizana in 2004, he became the boss of the Los Zetas cartel. He trained LZ troops in military style, and in 2008 he allied with the Beltran Leyva Cartel and the Juarez Cartel, and fought the Gulf Cartel in a war that left thousands dead.

On 7 October 2012, the Mexican Navy responded to a civilian complaint about armed gunmen in Progreso, Coahuila, and the gunmen threw grenades at the navy when they arrived to respond to the crime scene of gang activity. The Los Zetas troops and the Mexican Navy engaged in a gunfight, and Lazcano and a gunman were killed while one Mexican Navy soldier was wounded. His body was identified by fingerprints, and soon after, his body was stolen by drug dealers.
