Joseph Charles "Joe Bananas" Bonanno Sr. (born Carlo Giuseppe Bonanno; January 18, 1905 — May 11, 2005) was an Italian-American crime boss of the Bonanno crime family from 1931 to 1964 and a founding member of the Commission. A Castellammarese Sicilian, Bonanno settled in New York City in 1924, and came up under the tutelage of mob boss Salvatore Maranzano. After his mentor's murder on the orders of Lucky Luciano in 1931, he appointed Bonanno as boss of Maranzano's organization, and he became one of the most powerful and respected Mafia leaders in New York. During the 1960s, Bonanno hatched a plot to kill several bosses on the Commission and become Capo di tutti capi, but he was discovered and kidnapped in October 1964, reappearing before federal authorities in Manhattan in May 1966. He then fought a civil war within his family against Gaspar DiGregorio, who was attempting to become the new leader. The feud ended in 1968, when Bonanno retired to Tucson, Arizona following a stroke, where he remained, though molested by legal troubles, until his death from natural causes in 2002.
