The M18, also known as the 18th Street gang, Barrio 18, Calle 18, La-18, or Mara-18 is a Mexican gang of 60,000 members in Los Angeles, as well as the US South, US West, Central America, and Mexico. They operate in 120 cities in 37 US states. They are responsible for drug trafficking, assault, arson, robbery, kidnapping, pandering, money laundering, extortion, arms trafficking, human trafficking, theft, murder, racketeering, illegal immigration, illegal gambling, identity document forgery and fraud. They are allies with La Eme and Los Zetas and are enemies of the MS-13, Bloods, Latin Kings, Armenian Power, and Nortenos. Their rivalry with the MS-13 led to bloody gang warfare in El Salvador that forced the army to get involved in law enforcement; in August 2015 alone, 907 people (including 47 police officers and 16 soldiers) were killed in the largest amount of bloodshed in a single month since the Salvadoran Civil War in the 1980s.
