Biography[]

Lansky was born in Grodno, in the Province of Belarus & Volhynia in the Russian Empire to the Suchowljansky family, who were subject to several pogroms. They immigrated to the United States from Odessa in 1911, and he became known as Meyer Lansky while working with fellow Jewish mobster Arnold Rothstein's gang, and made friends with Charles "Lucky" Luciano, a fellow Soldato in the family, and also worked with Bugsy Siegel. In 1920, he attempted to get an alliance with Chalky White, but White dismissed him, so he turned to the D'Alessio Brothers gang for an alliance, and succeeded. One day in 1920, he was held as a prisoner by Chalky White when they visited him to discuss their poor relations with Nucky Thompson, along with Lucien D'Alessio and Matteo D'Alessio. Lucien was shot in the head for mouthing off, and Matteo was killed for saying that the other D'Alessio brothers would string White up higher than White's chauffeur, whom they had lynched because they misidentified him as Chalky. Nucky let Lansky off and told him to inform Rothstein of what he had just seen, and he agreed and left.

In 1923, he worked in the heroin distribution business alongside Luciano, after founding an organization that used heroin imported from the Orient as their source of money. They had to pay protection money to Joe Masseria, and one day, with help from new associate Bugsy Siegel, they killed all of the Masseria hitmen and vowed to kill him.
