Nucky Thompson

Nucky's Gang were a criminal organization based in Atlantic County, New Jersey, with connections in New York and Philadelphia, led by Nucky Thompson from 1920 onwards. The gang was involved in bootlegging and the casino business, assisting Chalky White and Mickey Doyle in their businesses. They were allies with the Waxey Gordon Gang, Chalky's Gang, Rothstein crime family, and the Chicago Outfit, while they were rivals with the Bugs and Meyer Mob, Rosetti crime family, Masseria crime family, George Remus' Gang, and the Darmody Gang.

History[]

Nucky Thompson created the gang in 1920 with the onset of Prohibition, originally working with Chalky White, Mickey Doyle, Bill McCoy, Lolly Steinman, and Jimmy Darmody. He was mentored by Louis Kaestner, a Commodore in the US Navy who had created his own bootlegging organization at the time. Nucky Thompson had connections with the police, as he was once the Sheriff, and his brother Eli Thompson took over that role. He had control over all of the restaurants and hotels in Atlantic City by 1923, gained in gang wars with Gyp Rosetti and Joe Masseria's gangs. They also fought the D'Alessio Brothers, who were also formerly aided by Mickey Doyle, who needed some way to pay off his debts to the D'Alessios after the NJPD and Coast Guard cracked down and Nucky fired him.

Nucky soon opened business with Johnny Torrio, Frankie Yale, Al Capone, Waxey Gordon, and Gyp Rosetti, and when Rosetti took over Tabor Heights and threatened to take over the boardwalks, Nucky fought with him with aid from Arnold Rothstein, while Rosetti was backed by Joe Masseria. He fought off 3 gunmen at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel with a Winchester Repeater, among other attempts on his life. Only after Rothstein made a deal where he would become partners with Masseria was Rosetti open, and in 1923, Rosetti was murdered by Tonino Sandrelli, his Underboss, who was hired by Nucky to do so. Also, he had to whack Jimmy Darmody, who betrayed him by taking his father's advice and taking control of parts of the gang for himself, such as Harrow. Darmody was shot in the face at the World War I Monument, and the threat was erased.

Afterwards, the gang gained power in northern New Jersey but made enemies with the Bugs and Meyer Mob, led by Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano, who fought for control of the Atlantic City area.
