Osvaldo Altobello was the boss of the Tattaglia crime family following the death of Rico Tattaglia in 1962, before which he had acted as Consigliere following the death of Luigi Fusco. Altobello was responsible for the peace treaty with the Corleone crime family and alliance, but conspired with Joey Zasa to remove him from power in 1979 to sate what the people wanted, but was poisoned on his birthday while viewing an opera.

Biography[]

Altobello was from the town of Montelepre, Sicily, but immigrated to the United States in 1902 after serving in the Italian Merchant Marine in World War I. Altobello arrived in Brooklyn and became friends with Philip Tattaglia and was a Capo in the Tattaglias during the Pacification of New York. Altobello became the Consigliere following the murder of Freddie Nobile in 1949 and was present at The Commission meeting in 1951 at the Hotel Alioto. Altobello had an understanding of Vito Corleone, leader of the rival Corleone crime family, however, and attended his funeral in 1953 and paid his respects to The Godfather. After the death of Philip Tattaglia in 1955 he resumed his role as Consigliere to Rico Tattaglia, who died only seven years later and Altobello was the one to become boss, rather than one of Tattaglia's pimps or hoodlums. He gave the olive branch to the Corleones and later made their peace with Barzini Don Paul Fortunato, leaving him with no enemies on The Commission. He also allied with the Greco crime family and the Sicilian Mob, connecting New York City and Palermo.

However, the alliance with Michael Corleone ended in 1979, when Altobello, displeased that Michael was trying to reach into the legitimate world, conspired with his Capo Joey Zasa to have him removed. This resulted in the Atlantic City Massacre and the death of Zasa and every other boss on The Commission, but Altobello stayed undercover. However, he was found out and his hit was arranged.

Death[]

Altobello was killed by poisoning in Palermo in 1980, with Costanza, the younger sister of Corleone, giving him a posioned cannoli as a gift to him for his birthday. He consumed the cannoli at the Teatro Massimo, where Corleone family and friends were watching Anthony Corleone perform in his operatic debut. He succumbed to his poisoning silently.
