Rupert Thorne was one of New York City's most powerful mob bosses who led the Thorne crime family. At his height in 1992, Thorne had connections to several politicians and turned the District Attorney Harvey Dent into a two-faced criminal.
Biography[]
Rupert Thorne muscled his way up through the criminal food chain in New York City and took control of the majority of the crime in the city. The corruption in the New York justice system allowed him to keep his place, and when his brother Matthew had his medical license revoked for removing a bullet from Rupert without reporting it to the NYPD, Thorne made his brother a member of the Thorne crime family.
Keeping power was hard for Thorne when District Attorney Harvey Dent began to persecute many criminals in the city, so Thorne sent his secretary Candice Michelle to blackmail Dent, threatening to reveal his meetings with psychiatrists due to his alter ego, "Big Bad Harv". Thorne's pressure on Dent drove him to insanity, and Dent swore to kill Thorne due to his taunts. One of Thorne's men triggered an explosion that hit Dent, causing him to burn one half of his face. Injured both physically and emotionally, Dent became "Two-Face", with a pair of twins helping him in getting revenge. Dent knocked off Thorne's rackets, and when he ran out of rackets, he headed for Thorne himself. Thorne placed a $2 million contract on Dent, one million for each face. With help from Candice, he tracked Two-Face to a club where he attempted to kill him; he was prevented from doing so by the vigilante "The Batman", really millionaire Bruce Wayne. The Batman apprehended both of them, but Thorne escaped prison due to his connections.
Thorne's intrusions into organized crime in New York brought him into conflict with the older Arnold Stromwell, who fought him over the rackets in the city. Thorne won out when Stromwell turned himself in to the police after his son was put in a drug rehab center due to his own drugs, and he became the victor. However, Thorne was pressured when his minion Spider Conway turned states, as he was held as a suspect for assassination attempts on him. However, the man behind the attempts was really Waylon Jones, also known as "Killer Croc", who had a vendetta against him. Thorne narrowly escaped a jail term.
